Re-read the original book RIGHT AFTER reading this book!

The original book suddenly became much richer and more enticing after I finished this Behind the Story, I HAD to open up the original book once more! What a way to increase the reading experience! Highly recommended!

Cathleen Schine admitted to having read Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility for what seems to be a million times. After reading it again one time, she began to wonder what a modern equivalent of the plot or the tale would be like. There is no primogeniture (the right of inheritance belonging exclusively to the eldest son) in the United States so she thought that for a modern American woman, a comparable situation would be divorce. She used Sense and Sensibility as a jumping-off point, but her characters, once they started to arrive, pulled her in different possible plot directions. (12) 

In another interview, Schine explained that her desire to see how Austen’s characters from Sense and Sensibility would translate into modern times—responding to a more radical change than the original story (well into middle age and old age)—inspired her to write the story. For her, divorce is the representation of the sudden loss of financial stability in a modern woman’s life, which is the main topic that she used in The Three Weissmanns of Westport...
